Can anyone learn Krav Maga?
Yes, everyone can learn Krav Maga. Krav Maga was developed for use in a conscript army, where anyone could walk into training and later be expected to use Krav Maga effectively in a potentially deadly situation. We focus our training on building Krav Maga practitioners from the ground up. No experience is necessary.
What will I learn in my Krav Maga training?
At Krav Maga Academy, San Diego we teach you how to strike using all of your limbs, safely and effectively. You will learn how to deal with an unarmed opponent in a standing position, as well as grounded and sitting positions. You will also learn to deal with multiple attackers. In addition to unarmed confrontation you will learn how to deal with attacks and threats with common weapons such as knives, bottles, bats, sticks, and threats with firearms. These techniques will also be inserted into your multiple attackers training.
The Krav Maga Academy San Diego instructors create unique and realistic training scenarios for each of the techniques you will learn. Everything you learn, you will test under stress. At the beginning level this will be mild; but by the time you have achieved a more advanced level of competency, stress testing will increase in difficulty and complexity to simulate the dynamic nature of street violence.
There are lots of Krav Maga programs. What makes someone qualified to teach me Krav Maga?
Indeed there are many people claiming to teach “authentic Krav Maga”. It is important that your instructor be certified by a person or organization that teaches authentic Krav Maga, and not one of many martial artists who have attempted to cash in on the popularity of Krav Maga.
At Krav Maga Academy San Diego our policy is that an instructor must have completed a three part instructor course, have on the job teaching training with a legitimate Krav Maga expert, have been to Israel to train with and be certified by the heads of the IDF’s Krav Maga program, cross train in other fighting sports, and have significant fighting experience.
Krav Maga Academy, San Diego guarantees that your training will be conducted by a professional instructor, with international experience, who has dealt with real violence before. Don’t train with someone giving long lectures and discussing theory. Train with the best.
I am in the Military. What training options do I have?
We encourage active duty, reserve, and retired military personnel to attend training at Krav Maga Academy. Training in the civilian classes will be an opportunity to improve your Krav Maga skills and work on your fitness. In addition to the ongoing Krav Maga classes, we offer regular classes specifically for Military and Law Enforcement personnel. These classes focus on specific aspects of Krav Maga relevant to you and your profession. We do not publicize this course content, so please see our military and law enforcement page to enquire.
In addition to ongoing training, Krav Maga Academy offers private seminars and courses for military personnel. These can be arranged in a small group setting or for your entire unit. The material covered will be tailored to your operational needs, so please see our military and law enforcement page for more information.
Do I need to be in good shape to start training?
No. Part of Krav Maga training is building up a student’s fitness level. We don’t expect professional athletes to walk through the door. Even if you have never done any sports in your life, you are going to be able to come to training, learn the skills that could save your life, and dramatically improve your fitness at the same time.
Can Women train in Krav Maga?
Of course. Krav Maga was designed to be learned by anyone, man or woman. In the IDF today there are not only female soldiers learning Krav Maga, there are also female Krav Maga instructors leading courses for both men and women. The training offered at Krav Maga Academy is perfectly suited for both men and women. We expect men and women to train together in the same environment as there is no gender segregation when it comes to real life situations.
Isn’t Krav Maga brutal? Couldn’t I potentially kill or severely injure someone?
Krav Maga is a system oriented around problem solving. If you have a potentially violent confrontation that can be solved without violence, this is preferred. If someone points a gun to your face and asks for your wallet, the easy solution is to turn over the wallet.
It is also important to remember that any violent confrontation has the potential to be lethal. One punch can kill. There is no humane way to exercise violence, which is why it should be avoided at all costs, and this is a message we preach in every training session. The reality of street violence is that it is ugly, it is not elegant. It is unlike anything you will see on Pay-Per View.
It is important to remember that your response should always be proportional and within the limits of the law. Do only as much damage as is necessary to survive. Krav Maga is not a punitive system, it is designed to ensure your survival… nothing more.
I am a police officer, I want to train in Krav Maga, but I am concerned that the techniques used won’t be applicable with my department’s policies. What should I do?
Law enforcement Krav Maga is a unique application of the system. Law enforcement personnel have requirements that exceed the expectations of a civilian. You are charged with upholding the law and protecting lives, we understand that and can help tailor training to you in our regular classes.
Additionally Krav Maga Academy offers training in take downs, restraint, and non-striking methods to suit law enforcement personnel. Please enquire about our special weekly sessions and our specially tailored courses and seminars for yourself or your department.
